How to Make Cannabutter

WSJ Team February 16, 2011 8

For those of you who have never tried cooking with your cannabis because you think its too difficult, the WSJ presents to you an easy, step-by-step guide on how to cook with everyone’s favorite herb. Roll up a nice one but don’t light it yet. There are a few important steps you’ll need to take care of first. Lets get started.

Ingredients & Utensils Needed

1 stick of unsalted butter

1/4 oz. of finely grinded cannabis (top notch dank = better finished product)

Double boiler or one large and one small pot

Tupperware container (medium sized)

First, you’ll want to get the double boiler going.  I didn’t have a double boiler on hand so I had to improvise. You can use two pots. Just make sure the smaller pot can fit inside the larger one.  Fill the larger pot with water about ¾ of the way up and put it on high heat. You’ll want to have the water come to a boil which takes about 10-15 minutes. While you wait, move on to step two.

You can begin to grind your buds while you wait on the water to boil. Take about a quarter ounce of your dankest nugs and grind them down until you have a finely chopped mixture as shown below.  Remember, the danker the nugs, the better the finished product.

Once you finish up grinding all of your buds, your water should be at its boiling point.  Now, you’ll want to take your smaller pot and place one stick of butter inside. Then, take the small pot with butter and place it inside the larger pot that is currently boiling water. Be careful when placing the smaller pot in the boiling water so that you don’t scold yourself or get water inside the pot with butter.

For the next couple of steps, you’ll want that spliff you rolled earlier because you have some time to kill.

Once your butter has been in the boiling water for a few minutes, it’ll be in a nice semi-solid state. This is when you’ll want to add your cannabis by slowly stirring it in. Once you’ve added all of your cannabis, remember to turn the heat down very low (basically a simmer). On my oven I had it set between the 1-2 dial.

For the next 45 minutes, stir your butter and cannabis mixture every so often. This is important! Don’t leave the stove for more than a couple of minutes. You want to constantly stir the mixture for the duration of 45 minutes.  I’ve heard of some people letting their bud butter simmer for 12 hours but I find this unnecessary. 45 minutes works just fine.  As a side note, I used a purple strain this time around and got a nice purpleish/brownish/tan color as I mixed. The color was really unique.

After 45 minutes, your bud-butter mixture should be fully rendered and look a little something like the picture below. The final step in the process is to strain the cannabis/butter mixture into Tupperware so you are left with only pure butter. To store the butter, simply keep it covered and in the fridge.

Now you can use this butter as a replacement for any baked recipe that calls for one stick of butter. I like to use any of the store bought cookie or brownie mixes. Makes about 8-10 servings of seriously potent medicine. Not recommended for novices. Side note, you could use 2 sticks of butter with the same amount of cannabis. You would be left with more butter to make more cookies. They would ultimately be less potent though.

You should store your cannabutter in glass containers; as plastic is not a vapor barrier, the glass will keep your butter fresher.

I use a smaller recipe. I get half sticks of butter and use 1 with an 8th of regs. Now you say KB is better for the product, I’ve used both and I don’t notice too much of a difference. Also if you CAN smoke it’s better to just get an 8th of regs for 10/15 bucks and a half 8th of kinds for like 20/25. I make what I like to call “awesome bread” and on that I only need to smoke an additional 2 hits to be completely plastered. But that’s me, but the good thing about that is; If you have a personal stash, my method lasts several times a day for at least a week and it’s 30/40 $. I don’t smoke cigarettes so this is a good replacement.

I use clarified butter, heating the melted butter to separate out the milk solids. It accommodates those who are lactose intolerant and has a better shelf life compared to butter.
